Everyone's purrs and prayers and positive thoughts seem to be working! Johnny saw the vet again yesterday. He has gained another half pound! This makes us all so happy. The vet said he looks good and that even his fur looked better.
Mom managed to steal some of his poop on Saturday morning. She took it to the vet that same morning so she could look for anything nasty or something that just shouldn't be there. Nothing to report in the poop department. It was normal.
The plan of action is for Johnny to continue taking the antibiotics for three more weeks, along with the supplement. He will go back on or around March 21 for another weight check. Of course, if he starts slipping or something is amiss with him, he will go back sooner. The vet said the supplement is something Johnny will be taking for the rest of his life.
Keep your paws crossed that Johnny continues to gain weight and improve. Also keep your paws crossed that the rest of us stay healthy. Mom said that been Daisy's dental surgery and Johnny's illness she has spent about $4000. She is seriously considering a "Go Fund Me" page to help cover the vet bills. She said she hates to do that though because we are her responsibility, not someone elses.

Update: Johnny's Ultrasound Results
Thank you all for your words of encouragement. Mom dropped Johnny off at the vet's this morning for his ultrasound. She would have liked to have been there with him, but it was scheduled for the same time as her appointment with the eye doctor.
Overall Johnny's results are good. His liver looks good. The vet said this something small on what would be considered his appendix. It could be something or it could be nothing. The only way to know for sure would require a biopsy. She said she did not recommend doing that at this time. We will continue monitoring him for the time being.
Dr. Green said that Johnny has gained 8 oz.! That is a half-pound!!! Considering that he lost 1.5 lbs. in 4 weeks, that was great news. Johnny will continue taking the medicines that were prescribed on February 4th. He will finish out the antibiotics and the supplement. Dr. Green wants to see Johnny in a week to check his weight again. She also told mom that she would really like to have a stool sample from Johnny. That would allow her to check for anything nasty in his gut. Mom will have to isolate Johnny in a room by himself in order to do that. With 14 of us it would be impossible to determine whose poop she is stealing from the litter box!
That's all we have for now. Thanks again for everyone's support. Keep Johnny in your purrs for continued improvement!

Monday Mews
Wow! It's already mid-February! It hasn't felt much like winter in Louisville, Kentucky. The temps seem to be warmer than usual for winter. There hasn't been any measurable snow here either. We think most of it has gone north of us. According to the news it looks like the northeast has gotten more snow than they want!
What we have had is rain. Although it is sunny today, we've had a lot of rain this winter. Mom said she'd rather have rain or snow, but not that stuff that falls in between: sleet and/or freezing rain. According to mom, when there is snow she can still get traction on the road when she drives. Not so much when there is ice on the roads. Since we don't drive we have to take her word for it.
Mom had a follow-up appointment with her surgeon at the end of January. Her wrist and arm are healing nicely now and she has been released from his care. The incision on her palm and wrist are barely noticeable now. However the incisions on her arm, especially the one on the outside of her arm, have left ugly scars. She is hoping they will fade with time.
Daisy has recovered from her dental extraction. In case you've forgotten, she had most of her teeth taken out at the beginning of January. She still has her bottom fangs. Since she finished her post-surgery antibiotics her breath no longer smells like something crawled into her mouth and died. And that, friends, is a good thing!
Brother Johnny has been under the weather. He and Cash had their annual exam at the end of December. Johnny had lost almost 3 lbs. and weighed just under 11 lbs. The vet suggested that Johnny have a blood panel ran. The vet called the following day and said everything looked good and to monitor Johnny.
Mom kept an eye on him. His appetite was good but he continued to lose weight. Mom took Johnny back to the vet on February 4th. He had lost another 1.5 lbs in a month's time. That put him down to 9.5 lbs. He was getting too thin through his hindquarters.
The vet felt around on Johnny, and listened to his heart and lungs. She said she didn't feel anything unusual and his heart and lungs sounded great. Mom mentioned a possible thyroid issue so the vet pulled out Johnny's lab results. She said that two different thyroid tests had be ran and they were fine. HOWEVER, his cholesterol and BUN were both low. She said that could indicate a problem with Johnny's liver.
The vet who saw Johnny and Cash in December was a substitute vet. Our regular vets (they are a husband/wife team) were on vacation. The substitute vet never said anything about Johnny's low cholesterol and low BUN! Mom was not happy and let our regular vet know this.
Our regular vet said she thought it best to redo Johnny's lab work. She would have the lab add another type of test for any thyroid issues. She also wanted to run a urinalysis. More blood was taken for the lab. Mom dropped Johnny off at the vet's office when she was on her way to work on the following Monday. She was going to leave him for the day so they could get a urine sample from him. Johnny's bladder said it wasn't giving up anything for them! He ended up spending the night and they got the needed sample the next morning.
(1) The urinalysis showed a bad UTI. Lots of bacteria and some blood in his urine. That in itself is enough to make Johnny feel bad.
(2) The blood work results were the same as the December results. Everything was fine, including his thyroid. However, the his cholesterol and BUN were still low.
For the past week Johnny has been on three medications. He has two different antibiotics that he gets twice each day. They will take care of his UTI and any infection that he might have in is liver. He also is getting a supplement once a day that is for liver support. Mom tried giving him the pills in those pill pocket treats. He took them the first two times. Then he figured it out! Now mom has to actually pill him. He does pretty well and he gets a couple of treats when she is done.
Johnny has a follow-up appointment tomorrow. He will have a weight check (mom said it appears that he has gained a little weight) and he is going to have an ultrasound done. The ultrasound is the best way to actually see if there is anything wrong with his liver (too large, too small, any growths or tumors around it). We will let you know what mom finds out.

Happy National Cat Day
We hope everyone is enjoy National Cat Day! Mom asked, "And how is this different from any other day?" at our house. We pretty much get to do whatever we want so mom did have a valid point.
Johnny had to go to the vet on Friday to have his dew claw checked out. Somehow he got an infection in it and the claw stopped retracting. He is doing much better now and the swelling has gone.
And speaking of Johnny, he sometimes has an issue with his brother. Cash will be minding his own business and then this will happen:
Johnny will come up behind Cash and bite his neck. Johnny will hold Cash like this for several minutes. Cash doesn't cry out or growl, so Johnny must not being hurting him. Eventually Johnny will let go and Cash will walk away.
The sun is shining today, so I think I'll find a sun puddle and take a nap.

Tabby and Tummy Tuesday
"Mom, we really need to discuss your mess," said Johnny.
Puff stops washing his beautiful tummy to glare at Daisy. Unfortunately, for Mom, Puff really isn't into tummy rubs. It's a pity because his tummy is very soft.

Mancat Monday
I like to put the bitey on my brother, Cash. I show him who is the boss around here!
Cash wanted to order pizza but I wasn't interested.

Friday Photos
Mom has been busy with the flashy box (aka her phone) so we are going to share some pictures today.
That's me, Clarissa, having a snack. Please excuse the carpet.
Nap pile #1: Lily, Daisy, Fred the Pillow, and the toes of Spunky.
Ginger and I were sharing a sun puddle on the living room couch.
That's Johnny on mom's bed. Those are her goggles behind him.

Tabby Tuesday with Johnny Dixon & Cash Dixon
Happy Tabby Tuesday! In case you didn't notice, we now have a last name. It's mom's fault. We may have mentioned yesterday that mom loves the t.v. show, The Walking Dead. And she loves Daryl Dixon (and his deceased brother Merle). She also thinks we all need full names. So we are now the feline Dixon Brothers. You know, we could care less about having a full name. But if it makes mom happy then so be it.
So on to the shenanigans. When Mom got up yesterday morning we were waiting in the kitchen to greet her. This is what she saw:
Yes, we are on the kitchen counter. That's me, Johnny, in the front. My brother, Cash, is sitting behind me. We look like we were waiting for breakfast, but that wasn't the case. Our food bowls were full of noms. We were actually plotting to take over the world, or at least our house.
What do you think of that old telephone on the wall? It was an old fashioned land line until last Wednesday. Now our phone goes through the cable company so this phone no longer works. Mom told our uncle to make sure he keeps his cell phone charged. Now if the power goes out mom and uncle will have to rely on there cells phones for calls.
It's colder than a well digger's.....well, it's just plain cold here this morning. We are going to snuggle down somewhere warm.
Have a great day!

Tabby Tuesday
Good morning kitties! It's Tabby Tuesday and we have new pictures of Johnny and Cash!
Johnny decided he would rather stay in the corner instead of laying in the magnificent sun puddles that graced our family room yesterday.
Cash had the right idea and he stretched out in the sun. Mom said he is one of the longest cats she has ever seen!
Do you see that laundry basket in the corner? It is full of plastic bags from the grocery and it has a pad on top of it. It is one of our prime napping places!
Cash has a kitty cold. He started sneezing on Sunday and last night he started coughing. Mom dropped him off at the vet to be checked out. She just spoke with our vet a bit ago and he said Cash ate a nice breakfast and isn't lethargic. He told mom to keep an eye on him and bring him back in if anything changes. That's a relief for all of us!
Have a great day friends!

It's Too Darned Cold!!!
Yes kitties, it is too darned cold in Kentucky!!! It was 2 degrees when mom left for work this morning. At least it is sunny outside and we can find some sun puddles in the house to nap in.
Since our last post we can tell you that Johnny's eye has cleared up and he is doing fine. Fiona's eye looks better, but it still has some redness around the perimeter. She has a follow up appointment with the specialist on Monday, February 3rd.
Mom finally had the new windows installed on January 20th. Most of us hid while the workers were there. It was pretty noisy with them taking the old windows out. The good news is the rooms with the news windows are much warmer now. The bad news is our windowsills are now more narrower. That means it is hard for us to perch in them (or on them).
We were very sad to learn that Prancer Pie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Friday. We know his family is hurting.
That's it from our neck of the woods. Please stay safe and warm!!!

Meet Johnny and Cash!
Mom Malinda here today. Clarissa said it was okay if I wrote today's post.
We have two new additions to the horde at my house. Their names are Johnny and Cash (they were already named) and they joined us on Wednesday night. These guys are All-American Tabby brothers. I was told that they are six years old.
Here is how they came to me: My friend needed a ride to her vet's office on Wednesday evening. Her car had broken down and one of her kitty's had a 6pm appointment. I agreed to give her ride in the nasty, pouring rain. While we were waiting, a young couple came in with their little girl. Each adult had a large tabby in their arms. The woman was in tears. They wanted to surrender the cats to the vet's office! From what I overheard they had fallen on some financial hard times and were now staying in a place where they couldn't have their cats. Unfortunately the office did not take surrendered animals. If they were turned over to animal control their chances of survival would be slim to none. I don't know how they would fare with the local humane society either. It was obvious that these boys were well taken care of and loved. So I did the only thing I could do: I brought them home with me.
They had their vet visit on Saturday and came out with a clean bill of health. We discovered that Cash has broken the tip off of his upper left fang. The vet said it appeared to be an old injury. It doesn't appear to bother him but I will keep an eye on his eating habits. They were both vaccinated while at the vet's and they both received claw trims. Also, they were already neutered. Johnny was anxious at the office and he started panting. I've never had a cat that reacted that way before.
Johnny and Cash are out and about with the other cats. Cash is pretty laid back about the arrangement. He has discovered the top of the cat trees and a windowsill that gets a lot of morning sun. He also seems to have a favorite chair in the living room. Johnny is a little more cautious. He isn't growling like he first did and I hope he will relax more as he gets use to his new home. He is more of an explorer and has managed to get on top of the refrigerator and tried to get into one of the kitchen cabinets. I've caught him on top of the stove a couple of times and made him get down. That is one place he is not allowed.
Without further ado, here are Johnny and Cash!
This is handsome Cash! Although you can't tell it in these pictures, Cash has beautiful green eyes. He is longer than Johnny and he weighed in at 12 lbs.
Cash has picked out this chair as one of his favorite places to sleep. Look at those big back feet!
This is golden eyed Johnny. He is a little shorter in length and little stockier. He weighed in at 14 lbs.
Another picture of Johnny. I put a collar on him to help tell them apart. I'm wondering if he wore one before. He didn't put up a fuss about and he has not tried to take if off.
They are already stealing my heart.
